I LOVE history and any book about history captures my attention. This one is ESPECIALLY good. It is America: The Last Best Hope by William Bennett. He does an amazing job of bringing the past to life and making it real. Quick - Andrew Johnson, good or bad president? (Some of you are saying Andrew who? Do you mean Jackson?) I now know the answer and why! (Bad - he was very racist and sought to impose harsh penalties on the South after the Civil War in direct violation of Abraham Lincoln's wishes. Those policies had disastrous effects on the nation for next 100 or so years!)
Anyways, if you love history and especially if you don't, read this book! I don't want to give away anything, but the good guys usually end up winning!

I am so going to read this. How weird you have this posted because I was just the other day wanting to find a good history book to learn more about history... I pretty much no nothing about it but now later in my life I am totally fascinated by it and am trying to get my kids more excited by it and how important it is to know it. Do you have any other suggestions other than this book for history?

I am actually in the middle of this book (and a about 5 others, to be honest- I read them alternately by whim or mood), and I cannot agree enough - READ THIS BOOK. It fills in where my public school education failed (always a ++), and in a way that really puts flesh on the bones of the people who were there.
Can't wait to read Volume 2.
