Once more, I cooked a turkey, and since I'm a bit of a salmonella-phobe, it kind of freaked me out. My cousin had told me that the secret is to soak it in a brine. So I bought a Styrofoam disposable cooler to put it in overnight. Those things are ridiculous at keeping stuff in. By morning I had salmonella infected brine all over my kitchen floor. Nothing a good mopping with bleach won't cure. And as long as you don't go licking under my dishwasher, I think you will stay salmonella-free at my house!
So after a few days of much needed cleaning, my family and Tim's joined us for a pot-luck style feast of thankfulness. We had close to 30 in all. Thank you, Jesus, for good weather so the relatives could sit outside! Food was fantastic and I believe a good time was had by all as many of them stayed for awhile. I always believe it's a sign of good party when the guests are reluctant to leave!
We capped off the night with one of my many favorite Christmas movies - A Christmas Story. It was the perfect way to usher in this next season.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

I brine every year (except this one). Buy a 5-gallon paint bucket a Lowes/Home Depot and put it all in there overnight in the fridge. Works like a charm. You can even drain the brine into the toilet the next morning if you aren't into scrubbing out your sink.
This year I decided I valued my space in my frige more than I valued brining my own bird, so I bought a fresh pre-brined one at Trader Joes. At $1.69/lb, it was still cheaper than most other cuts of meat I buy on a regular basis, so we'll probably go that way at least as long as we live in the vicinity of a Trader Joes. It was equally delish.
Happy Thanksgiving!
We had a great time as usual, thanks for all the hard work and hospitality. Dad
