Check Engine Light

The check engine light has been on in our Maxima for about a year. We take it to our mechanic, but he can't find the problem. It stalls once in awhile and sometimes won't start right away. Other than that, it's fine.

The problem: We have to get it smogged and it won't pass with the light on.

So I took it to the dealer. When the service writer saw the code, he looked dismal. He told me the car is most likely totaled.

So now, we can't sell it, we can't register it. It runs pretty good, but it is worthless. We can't even keep it and continue driving it until it dies...

Maybe they'll have some good news when they call. Something like, "Congratulations, we can fix it. It's only going to cost several thousand dollars..."

Ugh. I hate... stuff.

(gulp)...That's REALLY not encouraging. Our Maxima has had the light on for a long time too. Really bad oil leak as well. And it has stalled regularly when first starting up for over a year now (since we got it). Some of that sounds similar.

We took it to a mechanic today and it's taking like $600 just to clean it up enough to find out what's wrong with it.

(Jenny, if you read this, please don't trip. We easily got our $1000 worth already! And if she's not, don't mention it to her!) ;)

BTW...what year is it?

you could just pull the lightbulb out - get it smogged. Pay the stinkin fee - since smog checks are really just another way the gov't uses to reach into our pockets.

I mean come on now, do any of our cars pollute as much as the cars from the 70's - again - we are paying for the sins of our fathers... aaarrrrgh.. but I digress...

heck, I would donate the car, take the tax right off, use the refund and buy another - a really cool one, with tinted windows, hydraulic suspension, chrome mudflaps and a big ol' racin' stripe down the middle... yeah, Ricky-bobby would love that!

It's a 1996. He said it's a problem with the '96s and 97's.

Ummm about yanking out the light, don't think I haven't thought about it, but everything is so computerized, it would just give it the same code and tell them I need to replace the bulb!

If we get chrome mudflaps, can we get the ones with the girls posing on them. They're so cool and guys who put them on their cars are so hot!

Hey Michelle don't forget the topless bobblehead chicks for the rear window to go with those mudflaps!

Bummer. Ours is a 96 too. We got worse news than your next post shares. :(
